A Clearer World Restored: From 20/200 to 20/40 — My Bioptic Journey
Andrea Kimmel
I just received my bioptic glasses two days ago. With these glasses, my distance vision went from 20/200 to 20/40. That kind of improvement is huge for someone with low vision. I can read menus on walls in restaurants without having to walk up to them. I can see things at distance that I never could before. I can now read tiny print, like 4-point font size, without holding it up to my face. I can use my computer without extra magnification, line things up for cardmaking, thread a needle, and even draw and paint tiny details in my artwork. I can do all of these things with the same pair of glasses. There’s no changing glasses, there’s no pulling out magnifiers.
Yes, they are expensive. Yes, you have to get them through a Low Vision specialist. To me, they are worth all of that and more. On ocutech.com, they have a lot of information about different biopics and different eye conditions they can help with these glasses. There’s also a link to find a low vision specialist that prescribes these glasses.
Even if you can’t get a pair of bioptic glasses, go see a Low Vision specialist. There are many things out there to aid us. Don’t just order a magnifier off Amazon to find out that it doesn’t work for you.— feeling amazed.
