SideSight Hemianopsia Alarm

Lateral Awareness Alert System for Hemianopsia, Spatial Neglect, and Tunnel Vision

SideSight-LOGO_transparent

Individuals with hemianopsia have lost half of their visual field, which means they can't see things on one side with either eye. This can lead them to bump into obstacles or get surprised by people coming from the non-seeing side. The SideSight™ will vibrate to warn the user that there is a potential for a collision. It alerts the wearer to look toward the side they can't see. It's easy and natural to use.

SideSight Frame Mount Adapters

Clip-On Adapter

Clip-On Adapter

The clip on adapter uses a sturdy clip that will allow you to conveniently attach the device to the eyeglass frame.  This is especially useful for demonstration purposes.

Temple-mount Adapter

Temple-mount Adapter

The Temple-mount adapter uses O-rings that slide onto the temple of the eyeglass frame to attach the mounting adapter.  Place the adapter on the side of the visual field loss.  You can use one on both sides for individuals with tunnel vision.

We include O-rings in several sizes so you can select the size that most securely attaches the adapter to the eyeglass temple. We do not recommend the use of very narrow or wire temple styles.

Frame Clip On Adapter (left) and Temple-mount (Right) with a selection of O-rings provided.

SideSightGreenLight4

To turn SideSight on:

Just press the black power button once. You'll see the power light turn on and feel SideSight vibrate once.

To turn SideSight off:

Hold down the power button until you feel it vibrate twice (about two seconds). The alert light might not illuminate, depending on whether the alert lights are on or off (more on that to the right).

SideSight Alert Light Option:

You can choose whether to have the Alert light on or off with the SideSight.

When you first start the SideSight, the Alert light will be activated.

After turning on the SideSight, a quick second press will turn off the Alert light. Pressing the button quickly again will turn it back on. If the Alert light is off, it won't light up when turning the SideSight off.

If you restart the SideSight, the Alert light will go back to being on by default.

To charge the SideSight:

  1. Connect a USB-C cable to the SideSight, using either a wall cube or a laptop for power.
  2. The power light will flash while the battery is charging and will stop flashing once charging is finished.

Indicator light colors show battery charge status:

  • Green: Battery is fully charged.
  • Yellow: Battery power is reduced.
  • Red: Battery needs recharging.
  • No light: Battery is fully discharged.

Controlling the SideSight’s Performance

SideSight Default Settings

After extensive trials, Ocutech has identified the most commonly preferred settings for SideSight alert notifications. The goal is to notify patients of potential collisions while avoiding alerts for irrelevant obstacles. These notifications aim to provide enough warning time for patients to look into their non-seeing visual field to take appropriate action to prevent collisions.

Default Distance Alert Settings:

  • 7 feet (2.1m): 1 alert notification
  • 5 feet (1.5m): 2 alert notifications
  • 3 feet (1.0m): 3 alert notifications

In addition to the distance range settings, the SideSight application allows providers to customize the following features:

  • Frequency of ranging
  • Vibration intensity
  • Sensitivity to distance changes (the amount of distance change required to trigger a new alert)
  • Number of vibrations for each alert distance
